Pongamol is a highly versatile plant compound that successfully links ancient Ayurvedic wisdom with modern pharmacology. It is a bioactive compound of Karanja seed oil and is reported for its sun-protection activity due to the keto-enol tautomerism of its 1,3-diketone, which leads to UV radiation absorption and protection of dermal cells. It belongs to the furanoflavonoid class, found in the seeds and roots of the Karanja tree. HPLC and LC–MS methods exist for qualitative and quantitative analysis of pongamol in botanical raw material. Limitation of these methods are their complex instrumentation and high costs. Due to its exceptional abilities make it is a valuable asset for both natural sun care products and metabolic research. The current study focuses on creating and confirming a UV method to measure pongamol in raw drug material, which can be used regularly for quality control purposes.
