Drug distribution and targeting are two areas where nanotechnology has demonstrated its immense value. The safety and effectiveness of medications have been enhanced by nano formulations. One area where nanotechnology has been investigated for treatment of different disorders of Central Nervous System (CNS) is brain targeting. Brain targeting is challenging with oral or intravenous drug delivery due to physiological obstacles like Blood Brain Barrier (BBB) and first pass metabolism. Intranasal (IN) route is extensively researched due to its potential of bypassing the BBB and first pass metabolism for transporting medications to various parts of the brain via the olfactory or trigeminal pathways. Nasal drug delivery in Indian Knowledge System can be traced back to Naasya as one of the five procedures mentioned in Ayurveda for eradication of diseases especially of Uttamanga. Functions of naasya are not limited only to olfaction and respiration but also considered as pathway of CNS medications.
