Sutures play a critical role in wound closure and healing following surgical procedures but can also act as a reservoir for microbial colonization, potentially leading to surgical site infections. To address this concern, the present study evaluated the antimicrobial efficacy of silk sutures coated with different antibiotics against Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. Three groups were assessed: Group A with doxycycline-coated sutures, Group B with amoxicillin-metronidazole-coated sutures, and Group C with uncoated sutures as control. Using the agar diffusion method, both test groups showed increased zones of inhibition with higher antibiotic concentrations. At 25% concentration, Group A exhibited a mean inhibition zone of 6.8±1.20 mm, while Group B showed a significantly larger zone of 9.85±0.91 mm (p 0.001). The results suggest that antibiotic coating enhances the antibacterial potential of sutures, with amoxicillin-metronidazole demonstrating superior efficacy over doxycycline. This highlights the potential of such coatings in minimizing postoperative infections in clinical settings.
